6.2 Risk Assessment

- Soldering.

  • Likelihood : 3

  • Severity : 2

  • Risk : 6

  • Several part of the telescope requires soldering. As the solder iron, when heated up, can cause blisters and burns, we have to be very careful so as to not touch the hot parts of the iron. A good protective measure would be to wear rubber gloves to ensure that no part of our body is in contact with the solder iron.

- Hot glue guns

  • Likelihood : 2

  • Severity : 1

  • Risk : 2

  • The glue gun will be used often to stick things together and connect wires. Since glue guns are hot, they can be dangerous if not handled with care. Even though they may easily cause harm to us, the potential severity of harm is not high. Therefore, it will not be very risky. Nonetheless, we will still take precautions and not leave the glue gun unattended and look after ourselves.

- Sharp electronic parts

  • Likelihood : 3

  • Severity : 1

  • Risk : 3

  • We have to be cautious while using the different electronic parts. The operational amplifiers have sharp pins and the perfboard has pointed edges. Thus, they might prick fingers if they are not handled with care.

- Sawing of PVC pipes

  • Likelihood : 3

  • Severity : 2

  • Risk : 6

  • We have to be cautious while sawing the PVC pipes. Since the saw may cut our fingers or the PVC parts may scratch us. Therefore, we should be very cautious when sawing. While sawing the wood, a clamp can be used to secure the pipes in position to allow it to be cut without moving. During the sawing of the pipes, goggles can be worn for safety purposes so the tiny plastic parts from the pipes will not go into our eyes.
